Loaded Hotdogs
Hot dogs with all of the toppings!
If I’m going to make a hot dog, I’m going to go all out! This is just that, these hot dogs are topped with caramelised onions, crunchy bacon bits, fried onions, lots of melted cheese and then Ketchup and Mustard.
They are my ideal hot dog! I use a good quality beef sausage, but if you wanted to be authentic you could use frankfurts.
There are so many different textures in these that make them so yummy, the crunchy fried onions and bacon bits and then the soft caramelised onions - it’s seriously a party in your mouth!
I always get FOMO when I see all the spreads Americans put on for the Superbowl so when the AFL grand final came around and. we were in lockdown, I decided to make these with my buffalo wings and it was just a fun way to celebrate!
Let me know if you try them in the comments below!
Prep Time: 20 min
Cooking Time: 20 min
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
4 good quality thin beef sausages
4 pieces bacon
2 brown onions, cut into thin slices
1 TBS brown sugar
1 TBS balsamic vinegar
Fried onions/shallots (in the Asian section at Woolworths/Coles)
Mozarella/cheddar blend
Ketchup
American Mustard
Hotdog buns
Method:
Heat a pan over a medium/high heat and add some olive oil. Cook the onions with a lid on for 10 mins - this allows them to sweat and become sweeter
Add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar and stir until combined. Cook for further few mins
Chop the bacon into little pieces and then add to a frying pan over a high heat. Cook until crunchy - about 10 mins
Remove the onions from the pan, and cook the sausages until browned and cooked through - about 10 mins
Preheat oven to 200c
Once the sausages are cooked, cut the bun in half and place the sausage in.
Top with cheese - as much as you’d like! Bake for 5 mins until melted.
Add caramelised onions
Top with ketchup and mustard
Sprinkle on the bacon bits and fried onions
Serve and enjoy!
